At St Meriadoc Juniors, our vision is to give children a Science curriculum which enables them to explore and discover the world around them, confidently, so that they have a deeper understanding of the world we live in. To achieve this it involves exciting, practical hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity and questioning.

Our aim is that these stimulating and challenging experiences help children secure and extend their scientific knowledge and vocabulary.

We believe that these opportunities will give children the transferable skills such as observation, communication and teamwork to support them as life-long learners who will explore the world around them.

We cherish the opportunity to delve into the science of the world. Each half-term the children have the chance to explore key strands of the scientific world from electricity to evolution and ask those burning questions to feed their curious mind and share their own knowledge of Science. Each year group have their particular focuses and, across all years, the notion of working scientifically. There is simply so much to learn about!

The topics for each year group are:

Year 3: Plants, Animals including humans, Rocks, Forces and Magnets

Year 4: Sound, States of Matter, Living things and their habitats, Electricity, Animals including humans

Year 5: Living things and their habitats, Animals including humans, Properties and change of materials, Earth and Space, Forces

Year 6: Evolution and Inheritance, Light, Electricity, Living things and their habitats, Animals including humans.

This year for British Science Week we took on the themes of 'Smashing Stereotypes' and 'Growth'. For 'Smashing Stereotypes' the children explored key female scientists in today's world and the areas of science they explored. This allowed them to respond to science through dance, art and design. When exploring 'Growth' each year took on a different aspect of growth - from growth mindset to the development of technology. From this they designed drones, supported their minds and planted seeds.
